Oregon Arts Summit 2009 - Art of Collaboration
I couldn't of raved enough about last year's convention of bringing artists together to collaborate with others (even left brainers). There were so many inspirational stories from people that brought tears to many of the audience's eyes. Here local artist Celeste Bergin gives a brief overview in her blog. There were musicians, theater players, doctors, shoe designers, television celebrities, ranchers. . .it was amazing.
My only hope for this year was that it could only be half as good. But I must of missed something. . .
Oregon Arts Summit 2010 - Art of Adaptation
I felt like that I missed something at this year's Summit. I think that it was more geared to the administration side on getting more donations to the arts. They were pushing the word "disruption" but with an audience made up of 80% creative types it didn't push the envelope. They had PowerPoint presentations with graphs and an hour long speech after lunch that could of put everyone to sleep. Man what an opportunity they missed. On the positive side they did get in some facts and points that apply to most industries and dealing with the economy. Here are some short snippets:
Michael Horn - Innosight Institute
The majority of Michael's talk was done through PowerPoint charts. But at the end his greatest memorable story was about how focus groups did research on fast food industry and people that bought milkshakes (and why). See his organization here.
He talked about how huge companies lost their innovation to smaller companies that took risks.
The other quips that I have are questions to all of us:
• How do we get people to come to our events?
• How do we reach different audiences?
• Experiment, Experiment, Experiment
• Be Disruptive.
• There are half the number of journalists that there were 10 years ago.
• Rethink the Business Model.
• You need to adapt to your audience.
• Don't be afraid of failure.
• Startups are built on Failure!
• An alcoholic needs to go through rehab seven times before he succeeds to sobriety. Don't let failure intimidate you.
• The Obama Campain was the best use of Social Media.
• Nike should have been used for an example of this.
• Inline printing is the best ROI in direct mail.
• Howard Gardner's book "Five Minds for the Future"
• Americans are not good at Collaboration!
• Collaboration Manager
• Great question to ask in an interview is: What would you NOT do if your were asked to do it?
• Waiting for Superman - they should of shown this video
• We have to create enthusiasm (new markets).
• Good analogy is like picking up trash at the beach. If we start doing it (little by little) big things will happen.
The new Poet Laureate of Oreon (Paulann Petersen) reading her poem "A Sacrament" but I think in the subject matter of disruption (or collaboration) it would have been very cool to have poem rapped with one of Oregon's younger artists.
Richard Evans talk after lunch left me with nothing. He would of had greater presence with the video of how the had a music experiment with people using stairs and an escalator in Sweden.
I do have to give them credit for pushing alot of the social media during the event. Cultural confession videos, using UofO graduate students to assist get conversations going and Twitter link (that left quite a few puzzling looks on administrator's faces).
